British photographer Glen Luchford came to public attention in the late 1990s with his avant-garde fashion campaigns for Prada. With his elaborate lighting and an atmosphere of striking artifice, Luchford’s highly cinematic images exemplified the merging of the visual languages of fashion photography and fine art, establishing him as one of the most imaginative talents of his generation.

This monograph presents 80 photographs from the last two decades, beginning with Luchford’s early images, which foreshadow the gritty, found-light aesthetic that defined the first half of the 1990s—from quiet black-and-white portraits of music icons such as Ian Brown, to more aggressive street shots of Kate Moss that capture the spirit of a rough New York on the brink of gentrification. In his later work, Luchford’s spontaneous naturalism gave way to an almost Hitchcockian portrait style. The monograph features works produced using a wide range of media, from 35mm black and white to 8×10 large format and digital, and includes an interview with Luchford’s longtime friend and artistic collaborator, painter Jenny Saville.

From the beginning of his career, Glen Luchford brought new vitality to British fashion photography through his work for magazines such as i-D and The Face. He has created advertising campaigns for clients including Yves Saint Laurent and Calvin Klein, and has exhibited alongside painter Jenny Saville. Luchford’s work has been shown at the Victoria and Albert Museum and The Photographer’s Gallery in London, as well as at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (as part of the 2004 exhibition “Fashioning Fiction”).
